Future of Community Colleges Community colleges are at a crossroads. These two-year institutions have grown large and complex over the past years. They have evolved from technical training schools and junior colleges into comprehensive academies serving the educational, economic, and social needs of their communities. These are two-year schools that provide either an academic or technical education to students. Community colleges usually have more of an academic focus, and offer programs that allow students to earn an Associate of Arts or Sciences, Associate in Pre-Nursing or Associate in Applied Science—T degree, which may then transfer to a four-year.
The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) is the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges. The association represents + community and technical colleges and 2, faculty, staff, administrators and presidents who serve more than three million students. But community colleges are, indeed, a powerful engine for work-force development, delivering technical training (and retraining) for thousands .
Community colleges have offered international programs to a greater percentage of low-income and minority students than any other higher education institutions for thirty years, so it is easy to make the case that they deserve recognition and support (Raby & Valeau, ).
